buildingSMART Chapter Slovenia is a local branch of the international organization buildingSMART International (bSI), which is the leading initiator of the development of "open BIM" standards in the field of digitization of the built environment. buildingSMART Chapter Slovenia operates within the framework of the Association for Information Modeling of Buildings, siBIM.
buildingSMART International is an international organization whose main purpose is the development of "open BIM", i.e. open standards in the field of digitization of the built environment. bSI is an organization that is open to all stakeholders interested in this field of technology. It is neutral and independent from commercial companies or other organizations. It is a non-profit organization, the funds obtained are entirely dedicated to the organization's operation and development, with much of the work being done voluntarily. The organization has its headquarters in Great Britain and its branches (Chapters) in currently 25 countries around the world.
buildingSMART International develops the following standards:
The IFC standard is adopted by the ISO organization (ISO 16739-1:2018), and according to it, the standard is also adopted by local standardization organizations, such as the Slovenian SIST. All the mentioned standards are used in the processes of digitization of the built environment both in the field of tall buildings and in the field of infrastructure.
BIM is a process or method of information management related to built objects, using shared digital representations of physical and functional properties of built objects.
In the "open BIM" approach, models and data are exchanged using standardized open formats, which include IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) for exchanging models and BCF (BIM Collaboration format) for exchanging comments related to building blocks of models in the coordination phase.
With the open BIM approach, we can use any software that allows writing and reading open formats.
The mission of buildingSMART Chapter Slovenia is the promotion of open BIM in Slovenia and everything related to it: support for the development of open standards in BSI and local promotion and implementation at home.
The main goal is to educate the involved stakeholders to implement the ongoing transfer of information and data within BIM processes, especially between all software tools, with the help of developed open standards.
BuildingSMART Chapter Slovenia has set itself the following concrete tasks for the period 2021-2023:
The current status of the Slovenian Chapter is "Development Chapter", i.e. we are a branch in development. Our rights and obligations are set out in the contract signed between siBIM and buildingSMART International in June 2020. Among other things, we have to pay an annual membership fee, but we have the right to vote in the standardization committee and can participate in the meetings of the "International Council". The official representatives of the Slovenian branch are Matjaž Šajn (Chair) and Iztok Zabreznik (Vice-Chair). The Slovenian bSI Chapter functions as a working group within the siBIM association.
By joining the Slovenian Association for Building Information Modeling (siBIM) as a natural or legal person and by paying the membership fee, you automatically become a member of the Slovenian buildingSMART Chapter. All members of siBIM are also members of buildingSMART Chapter Slovenia.
Both buildingSMART Chapter Slovenia and buildingSMART international need funds for their operation and development of standards, which are partly collected through membership fees. An important additional contribution is made by the supporters of the buildingSMART Chapter Slovenia, who are particularly aware of the importance of open BIM standards and are ready to contribute a little more.
