Successful excursion - Rimac 2022
A successfully conducted professional excursion - tours of good practices in the use of the BIM approach
On November 11, 2022, the TIGR Institute (SRIP PSIDL) and the siBIM association organized a professional excursion with a tour and presentation of good practices in the use of the BIM approach in the implementation phase of the production-industrial facility Rimac, which is considered one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe. The construction and design of the facility was presented by the company 3LHD, which participated in the project as a leading designer.
First, we visited the premises of the project office 3LHD in the center of Zagreb. It is interesting that the space was used as a cinema hall for a while, but now it is one of their reference projects. The renovation, which was also part of the presentation, was complex, but a useful space was created where employees can create and perform their work. The fact that it is a renovated building can be seen upon entering, as a large part of the supporting structure is uncovered, and some structural interventions for strengthening can also be clearly seen. It was necessary to provide enough space for work in the building, and the chosen solution was to divide the large space into two floors with a new steel supporting structure. The end result is aesthetically appealing spaces.
Bureau offices in the renovated cinema hall. The ceiling is part of the original supporting structure, and openings were additionally made in the middle to light the rooms.
Other reference works of the office were also moved, including the development of the application/shared data environment VOLUM3, which was developed together with a subsidiary company. The application is also used on the Rimac Campus project and serves for cooperation between project stakeholders and enables optimal and timely exchange of information, plans, tasks, etc. Currently, they are also used for the construction of the facility, where they prepare current plans for the contractor and exchange information regarding the implementation. Part of the project is thus carried out without printed plans.

The central theme of the excursion was, of course, the design and construction of the Rimac Campus business and production complex. It is a large project, which is currently in the phase of implementation of production and design of the business part. The design team presented the entire concept, limitations and goals of the project, followed by a tour of the building in progress. Due to the size of the construction site, which is not exactly normal for a building, the tour took quite some time, while architect Marko Dabrović presented the issues and selected solutions and answered the questions of the participants.
It is interesting that a large part of the exchange of plans takes place through the VOLUM3 application, that a project of such dimensions does not necessarily require hard copies of the plans, and that digital tools can be used for the coordination of the construction site and successful implementation. Considering the implementation of the tool, this is certainly an example of good practice in digitizing construction project implementation.
